My Week in Frankfurt

On Monday we (my class from the high school) took three trains. We left Burgdorf at 8:53 AM and then spent ~30 minutes on the first two trains then 3 hours on the last. I talked to Fabienne, Elena, and Viola who was sitting with me and then I slept because I was tired. We went to our rooms which they say is a hostel, but I’m not sure. Then we went on a bus tour of Frankfurt and it was 3 hours of a guy with a weird hair cut speaking very fast german that I couldn’t understand. And apparently it wasn’t just me it, the other kids in my class couldn’t understand some things he was saying. We went to this tower and then walked around the old city for a while; it was called Main Tower or something. We then had dinner at this restaurant that was old looking but surrounded by new buildings. After we then had free time and I hung out with some other people and they were really nice. We just walked around and went over the bridges. We got back at around 10. I went to bed at 10:30 and then my roommates came in and asked if I wanted to go outside with them. I did for a bid but then I had to go to bed. I went to bed at 11:30 and wanted more sleep. I think I’ll go to bed at 10.

On Tuesday we had breakfast but it was more of a lunch spread so I just had some bread. We went to the European Central Bank or something like that. We were there for about 3-4 hours. We got a little tour and then our tour guide gave us a lecture. Again, I had no idea what she was saying because it was all talk about economics. We finished and breaked for lunch. Half of us went to a restaurant and I had schnitzel! It was good. Oh! In the European Central Bank they showed a video of people talking in English but....but....they voiced over it in German. So you could barely hear the voices in English. I have never tried to listen to something so hard in my life. Including these last few weeks. We went to this museum thing were we went to this place in front of the European Union thing and it apparently sold fruit and vegetables but they also smuggled Jews out. Or something like that. We walked around and we each had to explain something the teachers gave us a sheet for. I just held up the picture and looked pretty. Um...finally when it ended we had free time and I went with Elena, Fabienne, and Viola back to the hostel. We hung out for a bit then left for dinner. We went to this restaurant and the waiter was really...what you might imagine a typical German as. He was like okay what number do you want (the meal choices came with numbers) and we couldn’t hesitate. I had Spätzle which was really good. Nothing like the kind I had in Canada. Then we had free time so I and some other girls went home. I was feeling really tired so I went to my room and went to sleep. Oh! I texted Edna and we chatted for a bit. also, it is actually much cheaper here in Germany compared to Switzerland. A 1.5 L bottle of water is .20€. I’m amazed.

On Wednesday we went to an art museum. At first we went to the wrong one so we were a bit late. It was a cool museum. It was an modern art exhibit but I wasn’t that bad. It wasn’t great though. It was about ... I’m not sure actually. We finished the tour late (7 minutes) which was our time to buy lunch. We had to quickly get to the train station. Quick side note...Germany is more yellow than Switzerland. I don’t know if that makes sense. But also more box like. More squares. You can notice it. I didn’t think you could explain it. After the train ride and after we stopped for lunch, we then went to a concentration camp thing where there were some sick people I’m not sure if they were Jews or not but they killed them. It’s was called Hamabar. It was really I don’t want to say weird but sereal that I was there because they had to lay down this soap thing and then it was easier to drag the bodies and you could see in the floor where they did that. After we took a train back to Frankfurt and had dinner which was pizza. It was good. We went back to the hostel and it was really good. We just hung out. It’s now 22:43 and I’m going to bed. I had a moment that was like wow I’m actually here. I was in the restaurant surrounded by friends with “La Vie En Rose” playing in the background and it kinda hit me in a good way that I’m on this exchange.

On Thursday we went on a tour of the richer part of Frankfurt where all the business are and the expensive shops were. I didn’t understand the tour guide a lot but he was better than the one on Monday. He talked slow and everyone else said they liked him. It was a tour about economics so.... We then had some free time so I went with the other group and looked at some stores. We then split up again and we went to a sandwich shop and got something to eat. We met up with everyone again and we keep looking at some stores. We then stopped into this book store that was four floors and was the coolest place in the world. I could have spent longer in there but I was just looking for some A2 level of German books. I couldn’t find the kind we were using in class so I’m just going to get them in Switzerland. We then realized we were a bit late so we speed walked the rest of the way to the film museum. So we speed walked the whole way there. I didn’t think it was going to be fun but it actually was. We had to make a film so we did this scene from a Matt Damon movie that had a poker scene. I googled it an I can’t remember what is was called. It wasn’t Oceans 11 and it was one of the earlier movies. It was really fun. We then showed the other group our movie (the other one did a stop motion). We then had more free time. We went back to the book store again. It was so cool! Oh we first went to this grocery store in a mall that was called Rewe and I got a pear the looks like an apple. We then went to the book store. I wanted to get a book that I knew in English but it German. I found The Great Gatsby in German and another copy in English.  So I’m gonna read it in German with the English version beside me. We then kept looking for a bit and we came across the English section. There were a lot of books I wanted to get but I saw this really pretty covered book of old English poetry. I got that and it’s like a pocket book. I read a few and they have a lot of well known authors. We then went to dinner at this restaurant called Giocia or something. I had gnnochi in a truffle cream and mushroom sauce. It was good. I went back to the hostel, read a bit of my poetry book and then went to sleep. I had a shower and

Friday morning we went to breakfast and the hostel gave us a packed lunch. (Apple, banana and a twix bar for me). I left early though because I wanted to go early. I packed my bag and then we left for the subway. I watched the movie Zodiac on the train and was about the Zodiac killer. I didn’t
know it was a true story but it’s actually a really good story. Plus, Robert Downey Jr., Jake Gyllenhaall, and Mark Ruffalo in it so.... I got to Burgdorf but then stayed on that train and went to Bern and got some A2 level German books. Finally I slept.

So that was my week. Here are some photos:

"Wild Horses (feat. Florence Welch)"

I know I haven't posted in a while but things have been very busy on my end. So this past weekend I went to... Fiesche. I think that's it...it's somewhere in the Alpes, for a Rotary meeting with all the other exchange students in Switzerland. There were over 60 of us in this "Sports Resort." I met up with my friend Kaylee from Canada who is from my district in Canada (I knew her before I left for Switzerland) and my other two friends from my language course Sophie (USA) and Rachel (London, Ontario) and our other friend Kat (USA) and Otilia who is from Romania. I look a train in with Sophie and it was so pretty! When we got to the train station before this photo we found a whole group of other exchange students so we tagged a long with them. I'm pretty sure they were a main group from Zurich. We got off at the wrong station and had to walk a bit to get to the "resort" which was fine. We were the only ones we knew there so we talked to some other

“La Vie en Rose”

I've been here in Switzerland for 133 days and I have another 206 days to go. It seems like a lot, but January is actually the half-way mark for my exchange and this exchange has gone by so quickly. Saturday the 14 December Edna and I went to a place called Colmar in France -- which is here: and it was really fun! I got up at 6 because Edna thought it would be a good idea to chose the train that left at 6:43 AM (!!). We got to the train on time and took for about two hours until we got to Basel. There we had 20 minutes to catch our train but before we could we needed to buy our tickets cause it was with another train company. We got some breakfast first and then we went to the information centre, waited on line for five minutes that we didn’t have and then got directed to the SBB office in the train station. When we got to the SBB (the Switzerland Train Company) we had two minutes to get to our gate which was not gonna happen because it’s always very slow in the office. We took
